More Gannett Employees Unionizing; NJ-SPJ Supports Right of Journalists to Organize Collective Bargaining Units

Digital producers for Gannett news sites across the Atlantic region have formed a union with the NewsGuild of New York. The Atlantic Digital Optimization Team, or Atlantic DOT, which includes 21 producers collectively managing 37 websites across New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland, announced the union’s formation today.

The New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists released the following statement regarding the union announcement:

In these turbulent times, journalists need a seat at the table and to have their voices heard. The New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists (NJ-SPJ) supports the right of employees at the Atlantic Digital Optimization Team to unionize, and we encourage Gannett management to recognize the union and bargain in good faith.

Professional journalism and local news coverage suffer when financial objectives are prioritized ahead of local coverage and maintaining the quality of a publication’s news content.

This unionizing effort is not just about greater protections, equal pay and diversity but also about protecting journalism as a profession and as a public good for our communities.

ADOPTED by a unanimous vote of the board of the New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists (NJ-SPJ), on May 24th 2021
